Drawing Room

Following dinner, the gentlemen would retire to the Drawing Room, possibly to smoke a cigar and enjoy a brandy. Situated on the first floor, the Drawing Room of the 1860’s would have offered views of Glasgow some four miles away and the hills surrounding this second city of the Empire. Holmwood House, to James Couper, was as much about selling his business as it was a residence. In the Drawing Room he could possibly clinch a deal, sign contracts, and keep the paper mill working.
