The entrance to Holmwood is the hall, with its magnificent Luna marble fireplace, designed and sculpted by John Mossman (1817-90). Mossman, it would appear, was a friend of Thomson, and sculpted Thomson’s bust, which now resides in the Kelvin Hall Museum. The Hall leads you past the Dining Room to the Parlour. Just before the Parlour is the staircase leading up to the first floor. Standing by the stairs you can see how Thomson used light from the rotunda to illuminate anyone descending the staircase, giving presence and majesty. The detail of the staircase balastrading is quite something.
