HOLMWOOD HOUSE.
Built for James Couper in 1852, the architect chosen was Alexander Thomson. Thomson was known for the Greek/Roman style he embodied within his work, this earned him the name of Alexander ‘Greek’ Thomson. Holmwood is the finest example of Thomson’s work surviving today. The house and gardens are owned by the National Trust for Scotland. The NTS have spent a significant amount of time and money restoring Holmwood to its original splendour. Thomson not only designed the house but also designed the interior decoration. For example, the magnificent dining room with the Flaxman Friezes and the palour with the near circular bay window and detailed cornices. Holmwood is not a mansion, it is a home, a very spectacular home.
Holmwood is open to the public during the summer months and is situated in Cathcart, a suburb of Glasgow. Contact me and I will provide details of how to get there or visit www.nts.org.uk
I am a volunteer guide at Holmwood so the building is rather special to me and the NTS have allowed me time and access to indulge in my passion for photography.
This Project is ongoing and will run into 2024
